Description | Whitechapel mayn Vaytshepl is a new CD of Yiddish songs of London, researched and arranged by the longstanding band, Klezmer Klub. The songs, written between 1900 and 1940 describe the old Jewish East End, and tell of places and people, the bagel seller, the old fiddler, Solomon Levy the Pavillion theatre. It tells stories of immigration, of poverty, but also stories of the streets, containing humour and lots of politics. The CD also has Klezmer dance tunes, some newly composed specifically written for London. The the accompanying booklet contains all the lyrics and translations and a historical context. It brings the old Jewish London to life and has been performed to very enthusiastic audiences in London and beyond. |
