Description | Many attempts have been made by musicians to create a synthesis between Eastern and Western cultures. Generally, the results of these projects is that only one of these cultures dominates while the other is merely used for ornamentation. Bustan Abraham is attempting to face this challenge and has succeded in pioneering a unique form of instrumental music which combines elements of both Eastern and Western forms without sacrificing the musical integrity of either.
The Bustan (Hebrew and Arabic meaning “ garden of fruits and essences”, in this case the garden of Abraham, father of Isaac and Ishmael) was founded in 1991 by Avshalom Farjun. It gathers eight distinguished Israeli musicians, both jews and Arabs, who have combined their musical experience as composers, soloists and heads of musical ensembles to create original music on an international level.
Their musical background is very rich and includes classical Arabic music, classical European music, Jazz, Turkish, Persian and Flamenco music and even American folk music. The instruments played by Bustan Abraham are unusually diverse. Middle-eastern instruments-the oud (Arab lute), qanoun (Oriental zither), baglama (Turkish lute), durbakkeh and bandir drums-are joined by Western instruments like the flute, classical and flamenco guita, bass, 5-string banjo and violin, played in both Eastern and Western styles, and are accompanied by an international variety of percussion intruments. The combination of these instruments has never before been presented on the concert stage and the music -which reflects this rich diversity – is entirely original and was composed and arranged in a cooperative effort by all members ot the group. Bustan Abraham aspires to become a landmark in the creation of a new musical form which speaks to both Eastern and Western audiences and to pave the way for other joint creative efforts between Arabs and Jews. |
